Presidential Debate: Harris and Trump Meet in Philadelphia
The first 2024 Presidential Debate was held in Philadelphia on September 10th. Candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, discussed a range of critical issues facing the nation. The conversation covered policy stances, economic strategies, and national security. It was difficult to note the candidates' visions and plans for the country’s current challenges, as it felt more like an insult fest.
American singer and songwriter, Taylor Swift, publicly announced her endorsement of Kamala Harris, in a notable development outside the debate. Swift's endorsement has generated significant attention.
Don’t Touch My Hair, Mielle🙅🏽♀️
Mielle Hair Care Brand Faces Backlash Under New Acquisition
Monique Rodriguez, founder and CEO of Mielle Hair Care, launched her passion project in 2014. The business journey began in her kitchen and soon developed into a million-dollar haircare empire. Having partnerships with the WNBA, Howard University, FAMU, and more, it’s safe to say that she is using her successes to connect and build within the community. With exposure in more than 100,000 stores, the brand has touched the heads of many women.
In 2022, the company was acquired by P&G Beauty (Procter & Gamble). Procter & Gamble is a consumer goods corporation that operates in multiple countries around the world. Most of your household items are likely produced by P&G. Coincidentally, that was also when several lawsuits were filed against Mielle. There have been hundreds of complaints from women reporting hair loss, developing skin dermatitis, and alleging that the ingredients have changed. The main complaint and reason for filing the lawsuits is the lack of a warning label on the Strengthening Shampoo, which contains diethanolamine. Diethanolamine is a chemical that has the potential to cause cancer, and without a warning label, Mielle may be in violation of California's Proposition 65.
Due to the scrutiny and horror stories, Monique posted a message on TikTok. She explained that, when agreeing to the acquisition of Mielle, she opted for Mielle to become an independent subsidiary. This means that Monique will still have autonomy over the company and remain hands-on in every process, including product development, formulation, packing, and design. She addresses the accusation of ingredient changes, stating, "We believe healthier ingredients encourage healthier hair and skin." Near the end of the video, Rodriguez expressed her hope for the future of Mielle and its growing impact on its target communities.
In conclusion, all hair products are not made equal, especially with the variety of hair types and porosities amongst different cultures. What may work for you may not work for the next person so it is important to do the research on your own head to avoid tragedies such as the ones we have learned about.
If you are exploring natural hair products or looking for an alternative to Mielle, here are some options that may do the trick:
Eggs Have Been Recalled🥚

The eggs causing the illness among 65 people were sold in the states of Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The infection has spread to the remaining six states: California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Utah, and Virginia.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from eggs, people!

What’s new in the Food World? Chipotle Edition
Chipotle is currently running a trial for its new Honey Chicken, which began on August 27th in Nashville, TN, and Sacramento, CA, covering 80 locations. This new addition to the menu aims to introduce a unique flavor combination by blending the heat from peppers with the sweetness of honey to create a distinctive hot honey taste. The Honey Chicken is made with real ingredients, including smoked and seared adobo peppers that have been marinated, along with Mexican spices.
In addition to the Honey Chicken trial, Chipotle is offering a limited-time Smoked Brisket option in participating restaurants across the US and Canada. Introduced three years ago, the Smoked Brisket has made a comeback. The taste is inspired by Mexican flavors, featuring a blend of spices and peppers that give it a tender and flavorful profile.
Chicken is the most popular protein at Chipotle, and the Honey Chicken innovation has received the highest reviews of any chicken-based offerings during consumer taste tests. To encourage guests to try the smoked brisket, Chipotle is offering a $0 delivery fee through their app and website from September 12th to September 29th.

Cowboy Carter Receives ZERO Nominations from CMAs
Beyoncé's newest album, Cowboy Carter, was released on March 29, 2024. The album features 27 songs and has a total runtime of one hour and 19 minutes. The album is one of the top country albums of 2024, allowing Beyoncé to become the first Black woman to top the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
On September 9th, The CMA (Country Music Association) announced the nominees for their upcoming award show, and Cowboy Carter did not receive a single nomination. One might ask, "How could this be? Is it discrimination?" If that were the case, Black Country artist Shaboozey, who featured on Cowboy Carter, would also have received no nominations. Shaboozey was able to secure two nominations for his song, “A Bar Song”. Post Malone also released his first country album this year, featuring notable country artists, same as Cowboy Carter, and received four nominations.
The nomination process includes 6,600 voting members through write-on ballots and is a two round process. To even be considered, there is a certain amount of radio airplay required. Black female country artists have had nearly zero airplay on country radio from 2002-2020 (The Tennessean, 2021). A Nashville executive stated that Beyoncé did not cater to mainstream country music business. Country artists are expected to pay their dues. It is believed that Country executives cater to white consumers.
This album is not Beyoncé’s first rodeo with country music. In 2016, Beyoncé performed her song, “Daddy’s Lessons”, from her album Lemonade, with The Chicks. The performance received backlash, making the artist feel unwelcome in the genre. Fast forward 8 years later, the warm welcome has yet to make itself seen.
Kendrick Lamar Secures Super Bowl Halftime Show
It was announced this week that rapper and lyricist Kendrick Lamar would be headlining the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show.
This news was met with mixed responses, especially from Nicki Minaj, who took to social media to voice her frustrations about how Lil Wayne was robbed of the performance slot.
The news is only right, as Kendrick has had one of the most successful years of his career. “Not Like Us” is his longest running #1 song, breaking numerous streaming records and spent two non-consecutive weeks topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
In addition to the Super Bowl announcement, the artist posted an unreleased single on Instagram. Check it out.
Best Moments of the MTV Video Music Awards
The MTV Video Music Awards took place on September 11th, celebrating its 40th anniversary and delivering a vibrant showcase of music and style. Here is a list of the best moments, presented in no particular order:
LL Cool J performing his hits, reminding everyone that he is a G.O.A.T, and celebrating 40 years of Def Jam. Oh yeah, he recently released his 14th studio album, The Force. Available on all music platforms
Flava Flav gifts Olympic Medalist Jordan Chiles with a bronze clock. This scene of the show was enough to make a grown man cry.
Katy Perry’s performance prior to accepting the Video Vanguard Award. I can’t think of anyone who deserved it more. She gave us hit after hit in the late 2000s and all through the 2010s. The woman is. PERFORMER.
Sabrina Carpenter winning Song of the Year, while looking absolutely stunning. Best look of the night.
Chappell Roan’s performance. The performance was H-O-T . If you did not know who she was before, you do now. She’s here.
The red carpet was ablaze with beautiful fashion, as Sabrina Carpenter, Flo Milli, and Coco Jones turned heads with their striking looks. The event was a testament to the diverse talents and creativity shaping today’s music landscape.

Song of the Week - “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones
This is honestly the song of the season. It is perfect for all fall settings and activities. Highly recommend when walking, drinking coffee, driving in the rain, and cooking warm, fall dishes.
Norah Jones, with her breakout hit "Don't Know Why," captivated generations with its soothing blend of jazz and pop. Released in 2002 as part of her debut album Come Away with Me, the song showcased her soft voice and soulful flare.
"Don't Know Why" earned critical acclaim and ongoing success, winning several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year. Its mellow vibe made it a classic.

Album of the Week - Short n’ Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter
Album of the Week? More like Album of the Summer. With constant replay on social media, the album is inescapable. You learn one catchy tune, and before you know it, the next song on the album is gaining popularity. “Please Please Please” and “Bed Chem” quite literally have me in a chokehold. Don’t even get me started on “Espresso”.
This album singlehandedly catapulted Carpenter’s career and solidified her place in the music industry.
Unfortunately, it came to fans' attention that she copied her album cover from a French magazine, and the resemblance is clear as day. However, this section is about the music. She ate.
